Driving after a DUI offense in Washington State depends on the case’s specific circumstances. License suspension or revocation is a standard outcome of DUI convictions, but there are ways to regain driving privileges.
License Suspension After a DUI
Each case is different, and the process for restoring driving privileges depends on the distinctive details of the case.
Administrative License Suspension
After a DUI arrest, drivers often face an administrative license suspension imposed by the Department of Licensing (DOL). This suspension is separate from any penalties imposed by the court.
Drivers normally have 20 days to request a hearing to challenge the suspension. The suspension takes effect if the driver does not request a hearing or loses the challenge.
How to Regain Driving Privileges
For those who’ve had their license suspended, options may be available to resume driving legally.
One option is to obtain an Ignition Interlock License (IIL).
This allows the driver to operate a vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock device, which prevents the car from starting if alcohol is detected on the driver’s breath.
